Nondestructive evaluation (NDE) is a critical element of safe and reliable operation for various industries, including oil and gas pipelines. Across industries, differences in materials, regulatory environments, production scales, and other factors influence the types of NDE that industries use and are working to develop. A review of NDE technologies used in the nuclear energy, power generation, aerospace, and automotive industries was completed. Technologies identified by this review with potential for advancing pipeline NDE are discussed in the report, and high-level steps are described for technology transfer and the adaptation and further development needed for application to pipelines.
