High longitudinal stresses in pipelines can be a major contributor to failures of girth welds and circumferentially oriented flaws. These high stresses are frequently associated with construction and maintenance activities, such as excavation and backfill in new construction, pipe replacement, and integrity digs. There are currently no industry-wide guidelines for the management of construction- and maintenance-related stresses. The objective of this project is to develop such guidelines by extracting and streamlining the best practices from pipeline operators and other sources. |

This webinar provides an overview of PRCI project NDE-2-15 Selective Seam Weld Corrosion (SSWC) Identification and Measuring Grooving Ratio in the Ditch. SSWC is a narrow form of corrosion occurring at the pipe long seam and results from different corrosion resistance characteristics being present in the seam when compared to the pipe body. This form of corrosion can produce metal loss cross-sections (CS) that are very challenging to resolve with current non-destructive evaluation (NDE) methods routinely used in-the-ditch for typical metal loss evaluations. Since the shapes of natural SSWC are known (in many cases) to not conform with the conditions prescribed by laser profilometry manufacturers as valid for their published performance specifications, an investigation into the actual NDE performance of various techniques is required to fill the industry gap. In addition, SSWC has been known to fail at burst pressures significantly lower than would be predicted by commonly used corrosion-based assessment models which are indicative of a plastic collapse failure mode. This observation implies that SSWC can fail in a crack-like manner, and as a result, NDE techniques that are commonly used for crack characterization should be considered as potentially viable NDE technologies when searching for the most accurate NDE technique for validating inline inspection (ILI)-based SSWC calls in the ditch. |

This webinar compiles information regarding known factors, components, and conditions associated with internal corrosion of natural gas metal pipe. It supplies context to the topic and background information for natural gas and RNG. Corrosion mechanisms and combined effects are described. It is clear that water is the most important factor for pipeline corrosion; corrosion mechanisms will not occur without the presence of water. This is true both of natural gas and RNG systems. Other major components contribute to corrosion in the presence of water, individually and in combinations, and the process is complicated and variable. Unless the pipeline system is completely devoid of water, there is no circumstance, with natural gas or RNG, which assures a corrosion-free environment. All constituents which contribute to a corrosive environment must be controlled as best possible, at all times, and well-constructed corrosion management programs should monitor internal pipe conditions. |

This webinar provides an overview of PRCI project NDE-1-10A Hydrogen Cracking Integrity Management. The project and associated report describe the hydrogen cracking mechanisms of hydrogen blistering and hydrogen embrittlement. Based upon the industry's understanding and case studies reviewed, in-line inspection (ILI) strategies for two hydrogen-related cracking threat scenarios were developed. The ILI strategies rely upon a susceptibility determination in accordance with the guidance offered in previous PRCI work. The susceptibility determination methodology relied upon in this work was benchmarked using pipeline segments for which the presence of a significant threat of hydrogen-related cracking in pipe body hard spots was known. |

The purpose of this Webinar is to summarize additions to the Microsoft® Excel® Spreadsheet tool developed in project number IM-1-06 for the practical implementation of the measurement performance validation methodology outlined in the API RP 1163 2021 Edition (API 1163-2021). The addendum covers the following new features · Crack and Dent Assessments: the spreadsheet has been updated to consider the additional data columns and attributes necessary to assess the ILI measurement performance of cracks and dents. The updates include incorporating field measurement errors, the ability to input both length and depth measurements, and handling data subsets. · Field Measurement Error: field measurement error is characterized by a ratio of the ILI to field error. It is modelled as either a systematic bias or a linear regression. · Subset Data: multiple subsets of data can be analyzed separately. Incorporating data subsets allows operators to compare the measurement performance for categories of interest. · Simplification of the Probability of Identification: POI has been simplified by assuming the field-identified anomaly type is correct. The POI is calculated for each anomaly type in the dataset. · Expansion of Level 2 and Level 3 Tests: the null hypothesis and tolerance interval estimate methods have been expanded to perform retrospective analysis of the Level 2 test and one-sided Level 3 tests. · Burst Pressure Comparison: the spreadsheet has been updated to include additional data inputs for comparing the Failure Pressure Ratio (FPR) estimates derived from ILI measurements and field measurements. |

This research report seeks to advance the industry's knowledge and understanding of CT for pipeline applications. Multiple pipeline samples with various crack and crack-like features commonly found in gas transmission and hazardous liquid pipelines were examined with non-destructive examination (NDE) techniques, scanned with CT, and characterized by Destructive Testing (DT). Through the examination and discussion of the results, a more thorough understanding of the capabilities and limitations of CT for pipeline applications is achieved. In addition, a scanning protocol that is designed to achieve more consistent and reliable data from CT on pipeline samples was developed and is presented. |

Flood related channel bed erosion, bank migration, and channel avulsions can represent a significant threat to pipeline integrity. Because there is well over 100,000 miles of liquid petroleum pipelines across the United States, the number of pipeline water crossings at risk from potential flood related forces is equally large. However, the vast majority of these pipeline water crossings are located on small rivers and streams that do not represent a significant threat to pipeline integrity. Conversely, understanding which rivers have the potential to impact pipeline integrity is critical for pipeline companies to continue to safely and reliably operate and to efficiently mitigate and manage flood related risks. The project described here is intended to support PRCI member companies by integrating and normalizing historic and future riverine related assessments conducted by pipeline operating companies into a central system allowing for visualization and data management of river risk properties and characterization to assist pipeline operating companies to better understand and evaluate riverine related risks to pipeline networks and scheduling of future inspections and setting post-flood inspection thresholds. |

Selective seam weld corrosion (SSWC) is a form of corrosion attack that preferentially occurs along the weld bond line/fusion zone of linepipes. SSWC is an integrity threat mainly for vintage pipes, particularly those manufactured before 1970 using ERW (DC-ERW and LF-ERW) and flash welding. SSWC has resulted in multiple pipeline failures. Assessing the significance of SSWC, e.g., producing a reasonably accurate prediction of burst pressure of a pipeline segment containing SSWC, remains a challenge for the pipeline industry. This project consists of four major parts: Review prior work on burst pressure prediction,_x000D_ Evaluate the performance of current burst pressure models against the 12 SSWC failures described in a previously published report,_x000D_ Use a first-principles approach to examine the relative impact of factors affecting the burst pressure prediction of SSWC, and_x000D_ Develop directions for improving burst pressure predictions for pipeline segments containing SSWC._x000D_ The evaluation of the current burst pressure models enables the understanding of their limitations and the potentials for improvements. The examination of various factors affecting burst pressure prediction allows the identification of major factors that must be incorporated into future burst pressure models for accurate burst pressure prediction. The outcomes of this work provide clear directions for future model improvements. |

This webinar details the laboratory testing program conducted to assess the operating range of the spot-weldable vibrating wire (VW) strain gauges with a specific focus on most commonly used strain gauges for pipeline monitoring. These strain gauges are commonly used by the pipeline operators for long-term monitoring of a change in the pipe strain due to geohazard activities. The primary goal of the laboratory testing program was to assess the response of these strain gauges within the operating range and their behavior as they approach or exceed the manufacturer-specified operating range. This study aims to provide pipeline operators with a framework for evaluating the strain gauge data and to differentiate between the measured strain changes due to geohazards or the measured strain changes due to other environmental factors, instrument malfunctioning, or erroneous readings which may not be related to geohazards. This study evaluated various strain gauges with total operating ranges from 2,500 to 10,000 microstrain. In this webinar, principles of operation for vibrating wire strain gauges, examples of responses from vibrating wire strain gauges installed on the pipeline, materials and methods used for the laboratory testing program of bending plate tests, results of the laboratory test and strain gauges responses during these tests, and summary of findings are discussed. |

This webinar describes the work completed on modelling the dynamics of the brine string in Solution-mined caverns in salt formations, under excitation by the inner fluid flow and the reverse external axial flow around the brine string. Specifically, two flow configurations are studied: Configuration 3, in which the fluid flows down the brine string, discharging at its free end; this forces fluid in the cavern to flow upwards in the annulus around the upper end of the string. In Configuration 4, the flow directions are reversed. |

This webinar describes the ultrasonic meter manufactures' diagnostic ratios used to quantify operating changes and describes any major differences in how the meter design affects these ratios. These comparisons are summarized in a simple comparison table along with a table of manufacturer recommended diagnostic limits. Manufacturer diagnostics reports have been added to the PRCI Ultrasonic Meter Test Results Database available on the VTDC. This database can be used for several purposes. Users can compare the extent to which different meter designs compensate for the arbitrary 3-dimensional flow fields caused by flow disturbances. Users can also evaluate the ability of manufacturer diagnostic limits to identify when the disturbances exceed the meter's compensation capabilities. And finally, the database provides the ability to compare the advantages of replacing the manufacturer's diagnostic with RSS risk diagnostics that monitor and report the same changes as statistical uncertainties that can be used to prioritize and action design and operating problems. |

Risk management has been recognized as an essential decision-making tool in the pipeline industry over the past decade. However, there are still knowledge and process gaps that prevent broader implementation by industry stakeholders. The work described herein generated a gap analysis on risk management practices in the pipeline industry to define a future project roadmap that will be used to fill in the information, knowledge, and process gaps and to advance the application of risk management in the industry. A worldwide literature review of pipeline risk management practices was conducted, and industry inputs were collected through surveys and workshops. These tasks identified gaps in various technical area of risk management practices, which were then used as a basis to develop the scope, timeline, and funding requirements of the 10 potential projects in the related research roadmap. |

?This project addresses the pragmatic application of the new DOT/PHMSA MegaRule RIN 1 - 192.712 for recommended toughness values for determining if an ILI-detected axial flaw needs repair or can instead be observed for any future growth. The MegaRule toughness is expressed as the Charpy energy value, which came from Charpy test data at 50°F. However, the fracture toughness of a surface-cracked pipe is quite different than Charpy impact toughness values, es pecially if the Charpy data is in the brittle-to-ductile transition region. The surface-cracked pipe burst-pressure transition temperature can be considerably lower than the Charpy impact speci men transition temperature due to loading rates and constraint effects (bending versus tension loading). In cases with axial surface cracks in vintage base-metal pipe tests, the surface-cracked pipe burst pressure transition temperature was >200°F lower than the Charpy transition tempera ture. The procedures were extended to welds, and databases from member companies were ex amined to establish what Charpy energy values should be used to reflect the toughness of a sur face crack in the pipe at the operating temperatures and still be consistent with the MegaRule Charpy information and safety desires. As a result of this work, the following three Material Categories were identified. · Material Category 1 - All vintage base metal [these always had ductile initiation at nor mal minimum design operating temperatures, i.e., 50°F (10°C) and even 23°F (-5°C)]. · Material Category 2 - Most welds and HAZ (these also had ductile initiation at normal design minimum operating conditions, but some of the welds required passing a screen ing criterion to ensure they did not fall into Category 3). · Material Category 3 - Some vintage ERW-EFW and some vintage DSAW where they might fracture without any ductile tearing. Additionally, for each Material Category, there are three levels of analysis. · Level 1 is the simplest and provides guidelines if Charpy or toughness test data on the pipe line materials is not known. This level has greater conservatism than other levels where data exists due to comparatively higher uncertainty. · Level 2 is when the operator has Charpy data for the materials in their line. The Charpy data may only be at one temperature and may include different-sized Charpy specimens. Analysis of this data is needed to determine if there will be ductile initiation (i.e., the Charpy plateau energy is then used) rather than directly using the Charpy energy at the test temperature. · Level 3 is when the operator has more detailed fracture mechanics test data to pursue a more detailed fracture analysis for burst pressure predictions. This report presents the Level 1 procedure for each of the Material Categories, with a summary of some of the technical basis for how the Level 1 criterion was established. The Level 2 and 3 analyses are not presented in this report, other than some of the same information needed to sub stantiate the technical basis for the Level 1 values. There is a separate Level 2 and 3 report. Pragmatic Application of MegaRule RIN 1 - 192.712 Toughness Values ? |

Siemens Energy proposes a methodology to monitor & predict emissions based on design and operational knowledge of the SGT-300-2S through chemical kinetics model of the turbine and advanced statistical regression analysis. Having constructed, commissioned, and operated several CEMS, we may have a cost-effective alternative once PEMS is certified and deployed. The research completed illustrates promising results for next stages of this project. The corresponding report PO743-22201-R01 Validation of Next Generation Predictive Emissions Monitoring System for Gas Turbines describes field trial demonstration and validation of a Gas Turbine Predictive Emissions Monitoring System (PEMS) using engine data from Siemens Energy SGT-300 gas turbine compressor drivers at SoCalGas Blythe Compressor Station, California, USA. The advanced PEMS model results are compared with CEMS data taken from process analyzers measuring emissions in the gas turbine exhaust. After the necessary corrections on emissions for water content and oxygen content in the exhaust, the values for PEMS and CEMS show good agreement across a wide range of operating conditions. Areas where there is deviation between the values are investigated and potential improvements and modifications are suggested. The use of PEMS shows promise as a robust and cost-effective alternative to analyzer based CEMS and can be used to provide additional diagnostic information. Recommendations for future work are presented. |

Fatigue failure is a time-delayed failure that is one of the major threats to the pipeline integrity. For crack-like gouges in dents, the crack grows due to pressure cycling and eventually fails by fatigue. This work, which was funded by PRCI via Project MD-4-16, developed a viable engineering approach and a pragmatic fatigue model for predicting fatigue life of dents and gouges in pipelines. In particular, an equivalent stress method was developed with use of finite element analysis (FEA), and the crack driving force was determined based on the FEA results and the stress intensity factors (SIF) from API 579. The proposed fatigue model was evaluated with full-scale fatigue test data for line pipes containing dents and gouges, and then refined. The results showed that the refined fatigue model can predict adequate fatigue lives of dents and gouges in pipelines due to cyclic pressure. |

The influence of upstream pipe roughness on the performance of multipath ultrasonic flow meters was examined through a set of experiments involving three different brands of ultrasonic flow meters. Tests were conducted with 16-inch meters with piping, having a wide variation in surface roughness values with and without a flow conditioner. These results, when combined with the earlier testing of 8-inch diameter meters, can be used to support changes in the practices currently recommended by industry standards. |

Wellhead seals are a key component of reservoir and salt-cavern storage wells that function to seal the well from the external environment and separate stored fluids contained within the well. Loss of integrity of these seals or seal failures are a common occurrence in the storage industry. Practical guidelines on how to choose the proper sealing components and prevent seals from failing are generally lacking. In this study, data related to wellhead sealing were compiled through a literature review, discussions with wellhead experts, and a survey distributed to Pipeline Research Council International (PRCI) members and others involved in the industry. Through the evaluation of this data, meaningful parameters involved in successful and failed seals were identified and best practice recommendations were provided on seal selection and wellhead design. |

Understand the sources of conservatism, and how to improve the accuracy of, fatigue life estimation techniques for ERW or EFW pipes containing manufacturing process induced crack-like features. Learn about an improved estimation method of remaining pipe fatigue life estimates that better agree with actual operational experience. This can reduce conservatism in engineering fatigue life estimates over currently used techniques. Since fatigue life estimates are used to identify inspection intervals and assessing the life of features in a pipeline system, reducing unnecessary conservatism will avoid the cost of unnecessary inspections, pressure tests and repairs before fatigue life is expended. |

The overall purpose of this project was to extend our understanding of the impact of human and organizational factors (HOF) on pipeline process safety incidents. Six pipeline incident reports were systematically analyzed using a two-phased approach developed in the Abnormal Situation Management (ASM®) Consortium research program. The first phase of the incident analysis approach used the TapRoot methodology to chart the event sequence, identify contributing factors, including organizational practice failures, and identifying root causes of the organizational practice failures. The second phase of the analysis characterized the organizational failures as Common Failure Modes based on the HCS Effective Operations Practices and the specific expression of the root causes in terms of Common Root Cause Manifestations based on the Dirty Dozen human factors taxonomy. The Dirty Dozen taxonomy of human factors was found to have the potential to provide a tractable root cause framework for human and organizational factors. Specific limitations of the Dirty Dozen taxonomy as a HOF framework are discussed. Learning Outcomes: Expected Benefits: Target Audience: Related report: |

Webinar originally presented June 15, 2017 This webinar outlines the challenge facing ippeline integrity groups in determining the approporate number of digs required to confirm the presence or abence of stress corrosion cracking in a pipeline system when performing direct assessment. The webinar demonstartes a Bayesian statistical method that was developed as part of this research effot. Recommended pre-reading: PR-218-123603-R01 Procedure for Determining the Number of Excavations to Validate SCCDA Note that the attached slides have been updated from the content presented during the webinar. "The vertical axis of the bar graph was mislabeled. For near-neutral SCC the vertical axis should have been "Proportion of excavations with SCC." So 76% of excavations on tape-coated pipelines found SCC, 32% of excavations on Asphalt found SCC and 23% of excavations on coal-tar coated lines found SCC (Fessler's data set 13). The numbers do not add to 100%, because they are not from the same populations. The difference between the way that near-neutral and high-pH SCC is displayed on this slide was due to the data provided to Fessler. Ray Fessler had data from a number of different sources and not all the data reported the occurrence of SCC in a consistent fashion." |

The focus of this study was to determine the influence of subsurface engineered boundaries associated with the trench walls, and the presence of a water table, upon the leakage behavior of a range of hydrocarbon products. The project numerically modelled three products which were chosen to span a range of fluid types and viscosities. Laboratory simulations of leakage were carried out for the most viscous product in order to capture plume dispersion in semi-real time, and to allow numerical More...predictions to be assessed against experimental data._x000D_ _x000D_ Expected Benefits/Learning Outcomes - Recommendations for the use and placement of generic leak detection sensor types (e.g liquid, gas, thermal, displacement) within the trench and / or above the ground surface._x000D_ - Suggested monitoring locations taking into account requirements to detect pipeline leakage as early as possible in order to facilitate notification of the operator._x000D_ - Prediction of potential extent of site characterization required during spill response and longer term remediation activities. |

Webinar presenting an overview of report PR-015-15608-W01 Sample Probe Insertion Depth Testing. Sample probes for natural gas sample collection and analysis must extend far enough into the pipeline to avoid contaminants at the pipe wall but must not be so long that there is a risk of flow induced resonant vibration and failure. PRCI has sponsored a project to determine the minimum probe depth for obtaining a representative single-phase gas sample in flows with small amounts of contaminants. Phase 2 of the project evaluated the effect of probe tip design and insertion length on the fidelity of gas samples from flows carrying small amounts of liquid hydrocarbons. |
