Abstract

Two operational configurations of brine strings have been considered, resulting in two separate software packages: discharging brine string (Configuration 3) and aspirating brine string (Configuration 4). The software is intended to provide estimates of the maximum brine withdrawal velocity for preventing potentially damaging flow-induced deformation of the concentric hanging string in a solution-mined cavern well. Configuration 4 Stability Analysis Software is applicable to the condition when liquid or liquified hydrocarbon product is injected into the well annulus between the hanging string and the cemented production casing and brine is withdrawn from the hanging string.

The primary audience for this work includes engineers, operators, and researchers responsible for the design and safe operation of underground storage facilities. This tool enables engineers to evaluate the effects of geometry, material properties, fluid characteristics, and operating conditions on brine string stability.

The packaged software provides an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI), options for SI and US customary units, typical-value presets, and visualization tools, including Argand diagrams of eigenvalue trajectories. Together with the user manual and technical report, the software constitutes a practical deliverable to guide the safe operation of brine strings in cavern-based storage systems.
