PR579-183608-R01 Expert Review of Past PRCI and PHMSA SCC Studies and Road Mapping
Abstract
A review has been performed of past studies on stress corrosion cracking (SCC) sponsored by the PRCI Corrosion Technical Committee (TC) and the US Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). The aims of this report are (a) to summarize the results of past PRCI and PHMSA SCC studies and, thereby, serve as a resource for current and future TC members, (b) to identify gaps in current understanding, and (c) to assist in future road-mapping exercises. In support of these aims, the current report is structured in a similar manner to current and past SCC TC road maps, namely in terms of site identification, susceptibility evaluation, sensor development, mitigation and repair, and pipeline integrity and assurance of reliability. The review is limited to external SCC and, therefore, cracking due to the transportation of ethanol or in sour service is excluded.
This review builds on an earlier 2010 review of external SCC and extends that work to include subsequently published studies in the areas of SCC Direct Assessment (SCC-DA), susceptibility assessment, sensor development, mitigation and repair, and the development of in-line inspection technologies for SCC. The report also includes a gap analysis and an updated roadmap for future studies.
