Abstract
This document describes the formulation of a mathematical model for evaluating the operation of a gas system, with the objective of maximizing net profits by optimizing gas purchases, sales, and storage, combined with compressor operation. The report details two methods: a “linear programming model” based on linear approximations about steady-state flow patterns, and the ‘network approach’ which can handle reverse flow and adequately represent the packing and drafting of pipelines. The report details the advantages and disadvantages of the two methods. Although any transient flow simulator can be used with these methods, familiarity with PIPETRAN IV (Catalog # L20000) and its mathematical derivation (Catalog # L20005) are recommended.
