L00070 Flow of Natural Gas through High-Pressure Transmission Lines
Abstract
This document examines the data and formulas used to calculate the flow of natural gas through pipelines. Because of the lack of sufficient data, flow tests were made on 29 pipelines, covering a total of 757 miles. Comparisons were made between the coefficients of friction and the internal diameter of the pipe as expressed by the pipeline flow formulas and as determined from the tests used in this investigation. A special series of tests on small experimental pipeline were made to determine the relative delivery capacities of a pipeline when gas was flowing in the direction of increasing and decreasing diameters. In addition, a study was conducted of the physical and chemical properties of natural gas that influence flow.
