Criteria for Determining Seam Failure Susceptibility Due to Crack Defects

This work represents a major contribution to ERW pipeline management technology by providing a state-of-the-art procedure equivalent to the highest and most accurate assessment levels contained in the fitness-for-service documents BS 7910 and API 579. Application of these assessment levels is facilitated by parametric equations to enable key assessment parameters to be determined without recourse to expensive three-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analyses that are normally required to implement these approaches. The developed assessment procedure when combined with accurate input data will remove many of the uncertainties currently associated with using the lower level procedures in BS 7910 and API 579, including instances where these lower level procedures may result in non-conservative assessments.

Key Results

The results of this research provide pipeline operators with an accurate fracture mechanics methodology for assessing axial cracks in pressurized pipelines. The Final Report is available to our members on PRIME.
