Request for Test Samples of Pipeline Damage to Support NDE Projects

PRCI is continuing to implement several research projects that are either qualifying the performance of existing technologies or supporting the development and evaluation of new, innovative technologies for the detection and characterization of damage to pipelines. Research is being conducted to evaluate both in-line inspection (ILI) and in-the-ditch technologies. The success of these projects relies substantially on the availability of a comprehensive set of test samples for the types of damage that are typically encountered in pipelines, both in the number of samples available and the range of damage types and conditions represented by the samples.

To supplement the initial research that was previously completed on PRCI Project NDE-2-2 (Performance and Application of Various In-the-Ditch Tools and their Impact on Pipeline Integrity), PRCI is preparing to start work on a comprehensive qualification study for in ditch inspection technologies that will require a number of test samples for each of the following types of defects:


  • Internal Corrosion
  • External Corrosion
  • Cracks in Pipe Body – Single cracks and Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC)
  • Cracks in Pipe Welds – ERW and long seam cracks, cracks in girth welds
  • Mechanical Damage – plain dents
  • Mechanical Damage – complex damage, i.e., dents with secondary features

In support of the NDE-2-2 (and other) projects, PRCI is requesting that member companies contribute any test samples with the types of damage listed above for the benefit of the project. If your company has samples available that can be donated for the project, please contact Mark Piazza, PRCI Program Manager or John O’Brien of Chevron ETC, the Project Leader for the NDE-2-2 Project.
