Second Annual CORE Symposium Completed

The second annual CORE Symposium was held in Houston in late May, hosted by TransCanada-ANR, with additional sponsorship by GE Oil & Gas, Solar Turbines, Reignite and Dresser-Rand/Enginuity. As with the first Symposium last year, it was organized around the need to bring together pipeline operators and equipment suppliers to review options for meeting existing and pending emissions regulations, while maintaining efficient, reliable and safe operations. An important discussion thread addressed the supply chain question of how the emissions retrofit vendors will be able to mobilize to meet a potentially enormous NOx retrofit project wave that is expected to crest in ~2015/2016.

This year’s Symposium included gas turbine manufacturers who reviewed their low emissions, high efficiency product offerings. The status of the full set of emissions regulations that will affect pipeline engines was reviewed, and individual pipelines shared their experiences with multiple station NOx retrofits from an earlier round of ozone controls. Reciprocating engine OEM’s and NOx retrofit providers shared documented solutions, and a PRCI project to identify important lessons learned from retrofit projects discussed its key findings. Approximately 100 pipeline personnel attended the Symposium, which is premised on the realization that technology alone will not solve the emissions compliance challenge, but a broad, integrated approach is needed that cuts across the many disciplines of project planning, supply chain management, engineering, plant reliability and field operations.
