PRCI to Sponsor Facility Integrity Workshop

PRCI is sponsoring a workshop on October 24, 2011, to support the development of a comprehensive Facility Integrity Research Program for facilities related to operating energy pipeline systems. The workshop is being held at the Helmsley Hotel in New York, NY, and is scheduled in coordination with PRCI Technical Committee meetings being held at the same location October25 – 27. The topic of integrity management for pipeline facilities, both onshore and offshore, has been a point of discussion in the industry for several years and is a key focus area for many pipeline operators, including PRCI member companies. The Facility Integrity Management workshop is being sponsored to identify the needs and requirements for a comprehensive approach to managing the challenges related to inspection and integrity management of pipeline facilities, which show both similarities and have unique aspects when compared to pipelines — i.e., outside the fence.

Over the past several years, PRCI has funded projects that are related to developing methods, tools, and techniques for managing the integrity of pipeline facilities. These projects include several that have been completed and a number that have not yet been initiated. Those that have not yet been started are planned to be addressed through a comprehensive Facility Integrity Management Research Program (PRCI Program reference IM-2), which PRCI is now prepared to initiate and seeking input from pipeline operators.

The purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for PRCI member companies and other invited industry stakeholders to identify the needs and requirements for a comprehensive approach to managing the threats and risks associated with operating pipeline facilities, with emphasis on breakout facilities, terminals, and pump stations for liquids operations, and compressor stations for gas operations. PRCI will use the input provided by the workshop participants to establish the framework upon which the comprehensive program will be developed, as well as the more detailed elements to be addressed in the broader program structure. There is a substantial body of work that exists that pertains to facility management and integrity and many of PRCI member companies have completed or are in the process of developing facility integrity programs – one key objective of the workshop will be to identify the current body of knowledge and ensure that the existing information is integrated into PRCI’s comprehensive program.

The information gathered during the workshop will lead to the development of an approach and methodology for facility threats assessment and failure susceptibility, which will be the cornerstone of the program and possibly serve as the basis for standards development. The threats assessment and failure susceptibility analysis will also drive the work required to complete the Facility Integrity Roadmap and address gaps identified.

As indicated above, the workshop is being sponsored for PRCI member companies and other invited stakeholders.
