PRCI Coatings Roundtable Session Completed
PRCI sponsored a half-day Pipeline Coatings Roundtable Session which was held in conjunction with the annual Research Exchange Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia in February 2011. The Roundtable Session provided an opportunity for an open exchange of ideas and information on the key challenges confronting pipeline operating companies pertaining to coatings, and to solicit input from coatings manufacturers and other external stakeholders and Subject Matter Experts on the direction for advancing coating materials technology research and development. The Roundtable Session was divided into a series of presentations and facilitated discussions by PRCI member company representatives. The focus areas identified by the Corrosion Committee membership included:
- Construction and Operational issues and effects on coating performance and selection – includes coatings for HDD installations, effects of environmental regulations/requirements on coatings selection, effectiveness of inspection methods and their impacts on coatings application/selection, etc.
- Shielding and Long-term Performance of Polyethylene Coatings
- FBE Coatings State of the Art Assessment – analysis of past/current performance and identifying the next boundaries for FBE, additional applications, lessons learned and needs for additional research
- Selection and Application of Coatings in Challenging Environments – subsea and arctic construction, application methods, reliability in inspection techniques, possible advanced materials needs
External parties’ participation was intended to improve the understanding of the PRCI research programs and process and to identify the specific topic areas that their companies may be working on or planning to pursue that are consistent with the pipeline industry needs and goals. The various gaps identified during each of the individual presentations and focus area discussions were reviewed, compiled, and consolidated to provide the basis for defining relevant research projects and/or programs to address those gaps. Please contact Hans Deeb, Program Manager at PRCI, with any questions.
